I practice White Hat SEO myself, but lets be clear that black hat is not illegal. It may be outside of the guidelines, but there are a lot of grey areas there. Content is important, but if its stuffed with keywords it can fall into the Black Hat scale. Links can happen naturally, but with the amount of information on the web today it is hard to get noticed if you aren't building some yourself. My advice is to operate in the best interest of your client and their customers and everything seems to sort itself out. I normally see results within 3-4 months sticking with the White Hat strategies and that is well worth the wait considering the alternative.

Yes i agree with all of your information but there are lot of people who wants to achieve their goal as soon as possible so they use the black hat technique which is ill legal. White hat SEO is the actual way to achieve their goals. So always try to follow the white hat technique.

I think you're spot on with "how user-friendly and information-packed your content is". SEOs and Link builders forget that just because you're supplying content doesn't mean it is white hat. It has to be content of actual value - not just a rewrite of an ezine or ehow article.

I recently wrote a post on white hat content and using unique selling points: http://www.epiphanysolutions.co.uk/blog/white-hat-link-building-using-unique-selling-points-to-gain-natural-links/. If you read it, I'd be interested to know what you think.

Hi Tod,
I think it means as far as Google's Terms of Service. As far as I know, black hat SEO tricks has not yet been given much attention by the law.

Nice post...

Quick question about the table that explains white hat vs. black hat SEO:

(note that there are images not showing in the table - perhaps you can fix that to make your content better)

Anyway, it has a row that says "legal". When they say legal "no?" does that mean not legal as far as Google's Terms of Service, or is it actually against some kind of Internet Law to mislead people?

Thanks in advance,

Tod Marcus
